In 1920, when Christian Science found me, I was in a very bad state, both mentally and physically. From my childhood I had never been well, and of late years had been told by my physician that I was suffering from gastric ulcers. I never went long without having for a time to be kept on my back and on a diet. This was very slow work; and one attack lasted fourteen weeks, to be followed very shortly afterwards by five weeks spent in a hospital, after which I seemed better for a short while. The improvement did not last long, however, so I gave up my situation and went home. The doctor told me I must always diet and never eat meat again; and I thought I must spend the rest of my life in this way. I never felt well, and was sick after everything I ate; while at times I could not stand up straight.
The night before starting for Wales was spent with my cousins, who, I found, had just come to Christian Science, and who told me something about it. The following day I went home, where again I had to undergo a course of treatment and be sent away to a hospital. All the while my thought was: If I get back to my friends, I will try to find out what Christian Science is.
At the end of six months I returned to my situation, and to Christian Science. One Sunday evening the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was given to me in order that I might read the testimony which begins on page 679. I read it, and also page 221, which is quoted therein; and I was sure that if it could lift one then it could lift another. My friends advised me to borrow a copy of Science and Health, and I did so. I opened the book and read. It all seemed very strange, but I was wonderfully helped when I saw that God did not make me sick. How happy I was; and I decided that I would eat anything just like others. By Saturday I found myself free from pain, and quite well. The joy I experienced after the years of suffering I cannot express. I went about my work with a firm step, and the thought was always with me:
