I wish to express my gratitude for all the good I have...
I wish to express my gratitude for all the good I have derived from Christian Science, for I was most assuredly saved from destruction by being drawn to this wonderful truth. I owe deep and endless gratitude to God, to Christ Jesus, to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and to the dear practitioners who strove so lovingly and persistently in my behalf.
In 1908, after years of riotous living, I became a slave to liquor. It was a habit that grew until I craved it at intervals which increased as time went on. I had tried all the so-called cures, and doctors had tried to eliminate the craving, but failed. On one of these occasions—and, I am glad to say, the last—my wife asked a lady in the hotel if she thought Christian Science would help me. Her reply was, "I don't think it will; I know it will." A practitioner was asked to see me. I had not heard a great deal about Christian Science, and had never read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
I shall never forget the day the practitioner arrived. He asked me if I really did want to abandon the drink habit—if that was my desire. (I was under the influence of liquor at the time.) I told him I would do anything if I could quit. He smiled and said, "You will be all right." On page 1 of Science and Health we find these words: "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded andexalted before they take form in words and in deeds." I was almost instantaneously healed. That was seventeen years ago, and I have not once tasted or had the slightest desire for intoxicants from that day to this. About the same time I was instantaneously healed of the tobacco habit of forty years' standing, and had no nervous after effects or craving for tobacco. I have been healed of sciatica in a bad form, when materia medica had failed; also of erysipeals in its worst form. I was back at work in a week. I have taken no medicine of any kind during these years.
