Evening News

The very interesting remarks made by a clergyman in a recent sermon and reported in the Evening News, with reference to spiritual healing in the Christian churches, and the endeavors of the Christian Scientist in this direction, whilst they indicate a growing tendency in the Christian churches to reach out for divine means of healing (a tendency which is viewed with considerable interest by Christian Scientists), plainly show that our critic has not made a real investigation of the work which is being accomplished by the adherents of Christian Science. The Christian Science periodicals and the testimony meetings held in the Christian Science churches throughout the world provide abundant evidence that the "enlightenment and truths" which have been vouchsafed Christian Scientists, are neither "partial" nor "haphazard," but impartial, whole, complete, ever operative, and available in so far as individuals recognize the true nature of God and the immutability of divine law. Many students will testify with profound gratitude that whereas they once groped blindly among creeds and dogmas, now the way has been made plain to them through the revelation of the true nature of God by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," healing their diseases, fears, pains, and giving them an increased sense of well-being. They do not claim to have attained the perfect understanding that Christ Jesus possessed, but by results accruing from their present understanding they are encouraged to go forward with greater consecration to consummate the ideal embodied in Jesus' words: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father;" and also in those of Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 459): "Guided by divine Truth and not guesswork, the theologus (that is, the student—the Christian and scientific expounder—of the divine law) treats disease with more certain results than any other healer on the globe."
