[Original testimony in German]

Through the ordeals suffered along the way, I had lost...

Through the ordeals suffered along the way, I had lost my faith. I had often tried to regain it, but had failed to do so. In 1921, when in a state of great mental depression, I was led to Christian Science by kind acquaintances. At first it required a great effort on my part, and only the thought that others as well as I could be helped, encouraged me to learn more of this religion. When I found the following verse, "Acquaint now thyself with him [God], and be at peace," the truth conquered, and from that time the study of Christian Science has been a pleasure to me.

With the help of a kind practitioner I was able to solve several difficult problems. I was healed in one treatment of an old complaint of gallstones, which had again appeared. About a year previous to this I had visited some dear friends who were taking care of a child very closely connected with me. The child was five years old, but gave the impression of being only two. It could not speak one sentence correctly. The following day, on visiting the practitioner, I told her about this case, and asked her to help me; for I could not rid myself of the pitiful, tormenting impression the child had made on me. Work was taken up for this, too. Being absorbed in my own problems, however, I did not think of this problem again. A short time ago the foster-mother came with the child to see me, and told me how surprised she was at the progress the child had made in the past year. Except for the letters "r" and "s" it could speak everything plainly and could count up to ten. She sent it on errands on busy streets, and she was about to register it at school. I too was joyfully surprised to see what a nice child it had become. The mother remarked: "It's another proof that doctors do not know everything. Last year I was told not to take any more trouble with the child because it was an imbecile." To-day the child is perfectly normal and goes to school.

For this wonderful proof of God's love and goodness I am sincerely grateful to God; grateful to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who gave us this beautiful religion, as well as to the practitioner who has always so kindly helped me. I should also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to The Christian Science Publishing Society that all the good the Herolds bring us. I am sincerely grateful that through Christian Science I have become acquainted with God and have regained my peace.
