It is with a feeling of great gratitude that I bear witness to the healing power of Christian Science. For nearly thirteen years it has been my only physician. Previous to this time I had been a great sufferer, unable to find permanent relief. An opiate seemed my only friend. I was obliged to give up my work in the schoolroom, as I was said to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. For two years my attention was directed in a great measure to seeking for health. Physicians diagnosed the case differently, and none seemed to help me.
It was finally suggested that a change of climate might be beneficial, so I left my eastern home and went to Colorado; but there I seemed to grow worse instead of better. I spent four months trying osteopathic treatments, as this was something which I had not tried before and which I thought might possibly be what I needed; but there was no improvement in my condition. An X-ray examination was next advised, which showed an enlargement of the heart and other abnormal conditions, so that it was deemed best for me to go to a lower altitude.
Much discouraged, I had decided to return home when the kind doctor said he wished I would go to the Pacific Coast instead, as there might be hope in still another change. It mattered little to me, as there seemed but one outlook; so I journeyed on to Seattle, Washington. A few weeks there brought no change, so once again a physician was consulted. After a careful examination this one said that I had Bright's disease, that my heart was in a very bad condition, and that there was hardly an organ in my body which was performing its natural function, and advised my immediate departure to a warmer climate. But I hardly felt equal to another journey, and decided to remain where I was and await results. From April to August I spent most of the time in bed, and gave up all hope of recovery. I afterwards learned that the doctor told a friend he did not think I could live more than ten days.
