Letters from the Field

[Extract from semi-annual report of the Committee on Christian Science Activities in the Army and Navy for Southern California]

A steady unfolding of the work is evidenced by the fact that the Christian Science Worker has come into touch with more men and boys in the last few months than in any other similar period of time since the starting of the work, and by the healings which have taken place either with his help or by the work of the men themselves. Many boys have sent home for "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and others have purchased the textbook and other writings of Mary Baker Eddy. One young man bought the Church Manual and the Prose Works before leaving on the Panama cruise and read them through, in addition to reading Science and Health. Another purchased a complete set of Mrs. Eddy's writings and the Concordances. One boy from the Naval Training Station bought a Bible for another boy, and was seen by an attendant in a local Reading Room showing the other boy how to study the Lesson-Sermon.

Letters have come from various parts of the United States, from relatives, asking that boys be looked up; and frequent requests are made by Christian Scientists in the Navy to call on their friends. There have been many requests made by those leaving hospitals, and by boys and men going to ships, to write them. Many such letters have been written.

An officer who was on the Panama cruise stated that at the Christian Science services which he attended at Ancon, Canal Zone, there were about three times as many service men as he had seen on the last cruise.
