[Written for the Sentinel]

Mary Baker Eddy

When through the mists of time there shone on earth
A beacon light from heaven's eternal day,
A heart, made sensitive through suffering,
Obeyed the call, and walked the narrow way.

She did not falter, once she had begun,
This Mary, who believed that God is Love,
But set herself a work for all mankind,
That she this wondrous truth to them might prove.

What though the odds seemed all too great, at first;
What though she was betrayed and set at naught;
What though she found mankind so slow to see;
What though the path with dangers grave was fraught?
