A doctor, in a recent issue of your paper, first gives his description of a Christian as one who measures up to the definition given in a certain dictionary as "a believer in the religion of Christ" and of "Christianity," as "the system of doctrines and precepts taught by Christ." Then he inconsistently draws the conclusion that Christian Scientists and some others are not Christians. And why? Because he believes that they do not accept his interpretation of the doctrines of Christ, which may be a very different criterion from the one he started with. It cannot be too often declared that Christian Science is Christian because it is founded altogether on the teachings of the Bible. It may not fall in with every one's private interpretation of the Bible, but it establishes its own validity by offering conclusive proofs that it is the teaching of Christ. Christ Jesus taught his disciples to heal the sick, and declared that "these signs shall follow them that believe;" and "these signs" are the proofs which Christian Science is offering to-day.

The statement is made that Christianity, being founded on the doctrines and precepts of Christ Jesus, Christians "can logically only include such people as accept the Deity of Christ." I suppose by the "Deity of Christ" is meant that Jesus was God. But Christ Jesus, referring to the Christ, distinctly said that he was the Son of God. He also said, "I can of mine own self do nothing." Speaking of his sonship with God he said, "I and my Father are one." These teachings of Christ Jesus are fully accepted by Christian Scientists. They also accept the facts of "his incarnation" and "his sacrifice for sinners," and the Bible text quoted, "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin;" and they claim the same right to interpret the Bible according to their highest understanding that they willingly accord to the doctor and to every other earnest student of the Bible.
