The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Copenhagen, Denmark (Society).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Mrs. Frances Pugh, who said:—

Mary Baker Eddy reestablished the connection between health and Christianity when, in the year 1866, she discovered the Principle of divine healing, which she explained to the world in Christian Science. This connection was taught by Jesus of Nazareth and recognized by the early Christians. Nine years after her discovery of this healing, divine Principle, Mrs. Eddy published the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures;" and still later she founded The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Since that time millions of hopeless, weary sufferers have turned to Christian Science for healing when the regularly accepted systems of medicine had proved of no avail. Twenty-old years ago, a minister of one of the orthodox churches, in commenting upon the unprecedented growth of Christian Science, said, "Christian Science is robbing the churches." This was replied to by a Christian Scientist in the words, "Christian Science is not robbing the churches, but the churchyards." And this statement, which was true about twenty years ago, is none the less true to-day; for a large percentage of those who turn to the study of Christian Science are persons who have been given up to die.

It is not my province now to tell you what Christian Science is, or how it is operating to heal the sick and to redeem the sin-weary, but I can tell you that for sixteen years it has been my only medicine; and in this time it has not only healed me, but it has proved to me over and over again that God is an ever present help in time of need, no matter how great or how slight that need may be. On page 518 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says, "The rich in Spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another's good."

Mount Washington, Missouri (First Church).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Mrs. Marcella Stone, who said:—

Over nineteen hundred years ago the lowly Nazarene, as meek as he was mighty, said: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, ... and ye shall find rest unto your souls." I certainly was weary and heavyladen when I came to Christian Science, as one member of my family had fallen a victim to a dreaded disease. After consulting with specialists in Kansas City and for months and months doctoring with the best physicians, who pronounced the case incurable and sent us away for climatic conditions, all to no avail, finally we came home, as it were to await the inevitable. At this time Christian Science was presented to us, and in our desperation we eagerly grasped at anything that offered relief. After a few weeks' treatment the healing came. This same healing that came to my home can come to every home.

New York, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Bicknell Young; introduced by Charles F. Macintosh, who said:—

One of the most comforting promises in the Bible is, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." We learn through the teachings of Christian Science that there is but one way to abide in Him and to have His words abide in us; and that is in our thinking. Mrs. Eddy explains this very clearly in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 261). where she says, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." I know the truth of this statement by my healing of tuberculosis in its last stages over eighteen years ago, and through moral regeneration.

It has been reported recently that a professor of the Harvard Medical College made the following statement to his students: "I have no doubt that Christian Science heals both organic and functional diseases." This is just one of many proofs of the world's awakening to the healing power of Christian Science.
