It is about sixteen years since I first heard of Christian Science
It is about sixteen years since I first heard of Christian Science. I have been enjoying its literature and have been helped in every possible way by its teachings. When I think of how much I love Christian Science, my heart overflows with thanks to God. In the bringing up of five children it has been and is of inestimable value. When I have radically relied on Truth, it has never failed.
We were wonderfully helped through the influenza epidemic; indeed, I have never been through such a severe test. My baby, who was then nine months old and the bonniest little thing imaginable, in a few weeks was reduced to a little shadow; although I worked in Science as faithfully as I knew how, she seemed to grow worse daily. In the country town where I then lived a few earnest Christian Scientists had started services in a friend's house. Being one of the Readers, when Sunday came round I wondered what I should do, as I did not want to leave my baby, who seemed near the end; but I realized that doing God's work and being at my post was my duty, and also that my actual presence with her was not necessary, as she could never be separated from God. I left her in charge of my eldest girl, then eleven years old, impressing on her the importance of the precious charge I was leaving with her. I hurried to my friend's house, declaring the truth all the way, and there we read the Lesson-Sermon. Needless to say, there was no loitering afterwards. I got back home as fast as I could; and what was my surprise when I reached the gate to have my little girl run to meet me saying, "Oh, Mammie, Mary smiled and said 'mew' to the cat."
All mothers will realize what my feelings were. The love, joy, and gratitude that seemed to flood my being I can never forget, and I can never cease to be grateful for the experience. Also my gratitude to the faithful practitioners who helped me, and to the earnest friends who unswervingly stood by me, is unbounded. From that time the little one's recovery was rapid; in fact, there seemed no convalescence at all.
