Deep gratitude for healings received through Christian Science,...
Deep gratitude for healings received through Christian Science, and joyous anticipation of further benefits, prompt my desire to send the following testimony. In the year 1912, from a wish for spiritual sustenance and guidance for our three small children, which did not seem available in our old church, my wife and I attended several Christian Science Sunday services. Although slightly antagonistic, we tried to keep an open mind. We had seen no literature dealing with the subject. We then took our three children to the Christian Science Sunday School; but, misapprehending a remark of the person at the door, without entering we turned away. For several years thereafter we held simple religious services at our home on Sunday mornings.
About five years ago the subject of Christian Science was again opened by a friend who had made a study of the writings of Mary Baker Eddy for over twenty years. The evident beauty of his character and his patience with our spiritual ignorance impressed us, and a fortnight later I agreed to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting with him. Upon leaving the church I noted some of the works of Mrs. Eddy on sale. My friend, following my glance, remarked, "If you will buy a copy of 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mrs. Eddy, it will be the best investment you ever made." I smiled incredulously, but made the purchase immediately. As I read the book, dawn began to break, little by little, the chapter on Prayer opening the way.
One of our children and I had been under medical care for several years, with one illness after another. I had three medicine cabinets filled with prescriptions and bottles, and we had traveled several thousand miles in search of health. Previously, I had been told by a leading medical man that I would not live three months unless I submitted to an operation for double hernia. I consulted another physician and was informed that if I would have a certain appliance made I might be able to aviod an operation. The appliance was procured, and I wore it constantly for over nine years, putting it on before rising each morning.
