Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for the...
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for the many blessings that have come to me through Christian Science. I am giving this testimony that it may help some one to see the light of Truth, which dispels the seeming shadows that darken consciousness.
In March, 1921, I was suffering so severely from stomach trouble that I went to a specialist in Kansas City, and upon being examined was told a surgical operation for chronic appendicitis must be performed at once, else I might have an acute attack any day. I always had a great fear of an operation, so put it off in the hope that it would not be necessary. In March, 1922, however, the attacks became worse. Very much discouraged, I called at the office of a prominent surgeon and arranged for the operation, without, however, setting the exact day. I was instructed to adjust my affairs accordingly, and to let him know when I was ready. All this time I was praying for help; and just as I had decided to telephone the surgeon that I was ready, the telephone rang and one of our neighbors asked if I would try Christian Science for a day or two before I went to the hospital, assuring me it would do no harm. I consented, but with very little faith, and was told to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After reading the book for a few hours, I decided I did not need an operation for appendicitis or anything else, since all disease was false belief. I called a practitioner, and within two weeks was feeling fine, and able to be about my business and to make a business trip. After my return home, however, I was awakened about two o'clock one morning with severe pain, and the suffering was so intense that a great fear came over me again. The surgeon was called and pronounced it acute appendicitis. By that time my condition was so serious that he refused to operate, telling me that people in my condition did not get along in an operation. My wife called the same Christian Science practitioner to the house, and in about twenty-four hours the attack was over. In thirty days I was in my office again.
While reading Science and Health I laid aside my glasses, as they seemed to bother me, although before this time I had been unable to read without them; and I have never needed them since, as my eyes are as good as ever. At the same time I was healed of the tobacco habit of over twenty years' standing. My health is better now than it has been for years.
