Signs of the Times

[From the Morning Telegraph, New York, New York, April 25, 1925]

The Ringling-Barnum circus is commended for elimination of trained wild animals of the cat family from its program this year, in a statement issued by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Public education in humaneness to dumb animals paved the way for the elimination of the cat animal acts, the society believes. Incidentally, the announcement adds, the Prince of Wales is aiding in this work of public education. His Royal Highness has written the foreword for a book, "A Century of Work for Animals," which has been made part of the eight-year course for school children in humaneness toward dumb animals. Signing himself "Edward P.," the Prince, as president of the Royal Society, wrote in part: "There is in the heart of every member of our race to-day, a real love of animals and a desire to befriend them." The Prince declared that in protecting an animal from ill treatment, a man not only helps the animals but helps strengthen his own character.
