Observer

There appeared in the Observer of recent date an account of a lecture given on the subject of "How to counteract worry!" under the heading "Fresh Air Benefits." The chairman is reported as saying, "The best way to keep healthy is by the Christian Science method." We are entirely in agreement with this statement; but as it is followed by the gentleman's lecture, which deals in part with suggestion, autosuggestion, et cetera, some confusion may ensue as to the teaching of Christian Science, from the practice of which these methods are excluded. Christian Scientists realize that the healing practiced by Christ Jesus was accomplished by something deeper, more substantial and reliable than suggestion, or any other agent of the so-called human mind. It was brought about by his understanding of God and of the everlasting truth which coexists with Him; by his understanding of Life and Being as viewed from the standpoint of true sonship, which he consciously, and so practically, manifested. They recognize that he made whole the maimed, cleansed the lepers, raised the dead,—healed all manner of disease and sin,—not by "suggestion" but by discernment of the everlasting, actual verities of God's creation, ever present, and awaiting recognition. Far above and beyond the limited scope of the human or carnal mind and its methods, Jesus watched the operation of God's never failing laws, for the revelation of spiritual ideas. Thus, all power was given him to banish the ills of mankind. In endeavoring to follow the Way-shower, Christian Scientists have proved in some measure that to realize for a moment the ceaseless action of God's laws, the perfection of His works, the order and harmony of the universe as existent in Him, is to climb above the mists of material concepts and their attendant ills, and perceive a new manhood and womanhood, a birthright of freedom, health, purity, and goodness,—all that belongs to the image and likeness of God. With this understanding the healing of sickness and sin takes place. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 228 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as follows: "The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses. Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Then they will control their own bodies through the understanding of divine Science. Dropping their present beliefs, they will recognize harmony as the spiritual reality and discord as the material unreality."
