It is almost eight years since I became interested in Christian Science, during which time I have had many blessings. I became a member of a so-called orthodox church at the age of twelve, and took an active interest in the Sunday school and all church work; but somehow there was always an unsatisfied longing, and I could find neither comfort nor help in times of distress and sickness, for I had been taught that God sends sorrow and affliction for our good, and that we should, consequently, bear them with Christian resignation. What a joy to know that God not only does not send sickness upon us, but, on the contrary, "healeth all thy diseases"!
From my earliest recollection until I came into Christian Science I had been under the care of different doctors. I had undergone several operations, all of which left me in a more weakened and nervous condition; and finally I was told by several specialists that they could do no more for me. During all those years never a day passed when a dose of medicine was not thought necessary. About two years prior to coming into Science I had what the doctors pronounced nervous prostration. I then gave up dosing and had treatments from several osteopaths and chiropractors, also electrical treatments for several months; but in the end I was like the woman spoken of in the Bible who "had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered." I was thoroughly discouraged and had come to the conclusion that death would, indeed, be a relief; and upon retiring I would ask God to take me away before the dawn of another day. It was with regret that I would awaken, dreading to live through another day.
All this has been changed, and I am happier and enjoy better health than ever before. Through the faithful and efficient work of a Christian Science practitioner I laid aside glasses after wearing them for ten years, although I had been told by the oculist who fitted them that I should always have to wear them. This healing took place very early in my study of Christian Science. I now consider my sight perfect. I have also laid aside an abdominal support, which had been put on by a surgeon after a serious operation, and which I had worn for ten years and thought I could not do without. Sick headaches, from which I have suffered since childhood, are less frequent and far less severe. Before coming into Science there were few things I could enjoy, on account of very great fear; but I am happy to say I am gradually getting rid of this archenemy, and am experiencing more freedom than I had ever known before. While I feel there are yet many false beliefs to be uprooted and cast out of consciousness, I am grateful that some, at least, have been eradicated; and I am daily striving to "put off the old man with his deeds" and to "put on the new man."
