A medical man writing in the Herald on "The Benefit of Faith Cures" names Christian Science among a number of such methods. The benefit of Christian Science is self-evident, but it is well to see clearly that Christian Science is much more than a faith cure. The cures in Christian Science are accomplished through spiritual understanding. The writer of the article referred to explains that Christian Science is employed in so-called nervous troubles, and that in such cases it is helpful. This is indeed true, but it is not the whole truth. Christian Science is being successfully employed in the healing of both so-called organic and functional diseases, as most well-informed people now know. The success of Christian Science in healing disease is too obvious and well known to be intelligently disputed, refuted, or obscured.

One of the difficulties of the writer of the article appears to be that he confuses methods of healing by the so-called human mind with the method of Christian Science, in which the divine Mind, God, alone heals. A Christian Scientist who was formerly a practicing physician has told how in his former practice of medicine he was forced to recognize the mental nature of disease. After investigating various methods of mental healing, he finally saw that Christian Science stands out distinctly from all other methods because the healing power employed in Christian Science is the power of divine Mind, God, while in all other systems the so-called human mind is employed. When, after patient investigation, he had gradually reached this point, he accepted Christian Science as the true and effective method of healing. This is but one of many such experiences of individuals, formerly physicians, who are now Christian Scientists. It should be made clear, further, that it is not one's belief in Christian Science that heals, as the critic seems to imply. To believe in the efficacy of Truth in healing is a step in the right direction, and it is therefore better than disbelief in Truth. When, however, one gains faith in Truth, he has taken a further step; and these steps should lead to an understanding of Truth, by means of which healing in Christian Science is accomplished.
