The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Belfast, Ireland (First Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by John George Sumner, who said:—

Some years ago, when I was earnestly seeking for Truth, it was my great privilege to come in touch with the teachings of Christian Science. Up to this period I had had a somewhat eventful career, and various experiences in different parts of the world had set me wondering as to what was the explanation of human existence. I searched in many directions for the explanation, but no real light was thrown upon the great mystery until I took up the study of Christian Science. Since I have been studying it, Christian Science has furnished me with overwhelming proof of its divine and healing efficacy. I now know, positively, through personal experiences of physical healing and spiritual growth, that Christian Science is not just a human doctrine, but a divine discovery, a revelation of the law of God. When approaching this profound and sacred subject, one should clearly understand that Christian Science does not attempt, or presume, to lay "other foundation ... than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." The mission of Christian Science is rather the mission of an interpreter. As an interpreter it penetrates beneath and beyond the material seeming, and brings to light the spiritual fact. Christian Science, which has been called by its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy, "the sunshine of Truth" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 299), unfolds the tremendous significance of the moral law and the prophets; and it establishes man's real identity as the spiritual idea of God, good.
