Christian Science has indeed been the Comforter during...
Christian Science has indeed been the Comforter during the past fifteen years of my life. It had been presented to me ten years before, but I was seemingly content to go on suffering from my physical ailments, and sent the "little book," "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, back to its owner, as it did not then mean anything to me. I am grateful, however, that the seed was sown. The treatment and dieting prescribed by two physicians for a distressing and painful condition of my hands during the winter months, having failed to relieve me, I turned to Christian Science for help. This trouble was not completely healed at once, but recurred at intervals, being relieved each time by treatment from a practitioner. When the realization came to me that cold weather had no power over God's child, I was healed. Christian Science has also healed me of severe headaches, tonsillitis, a sprained ankle, a severe burn on my foot, and fatigue; in fact, it has been my only physician during all these years. I also found Christian Science a panacea in sorrow, when my husband and other dear ones passed from my sight.
I desire particularly to express gratitude for the healing of my daughter of a nervous breakdown, with great mental depression and all the physical complications which that term includes. It was a slow healing, as she seemed to manifest this inharmony for almost two years. During this time she became much reduced in flesh, to the point of emaciation, weighing less than eighty pounds. In order to satisfy members of the family who are not interested in Christian Science, a physician was called for diagnosis. His final verdict was that the case was entirely mental, and that her only hope of recovery lay in Christian Science. He considered the case hopeless, as indeed from her appearance it seemed to be. But Jesus tells us to "judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." From the first a loving practitioner was ministering to the child; and it is due to her earnest, consecrated efforts that the healing was accomplished. In about three months after my daughter began to regain health, strength, and flesh, she was able to take a position in her chosen line of work.
As I write, I am reminded of our Leader's statement in Science and Health (p. 471), "Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history." This healing has been said by several persons, both in and out of Christian Science, to be as wonderful as any they had ever seen, one who knows nothing of Christian Science saying, "She did not seem to have a chance."
