Signs of the Times

[The Bishop of London, in the Christ Church Parish Magazine, Ealing, Middlesex, England]

The mission in Central London ... has led me to believe more strongly than ever in the power of the eternal gospel to change the world. The subject of the mission was "The Spirit of Jesus," and the whole message, as it slowly evolved itself during the six weeks in answer to questions, and as one proclamation of Jesus Christ's led up to another, amounted to this, that there is only one chance of peace in the world of nations, of harmony in our industrial world, of quiet happiness in our home lives, of rest in our own souls, and that is when that Spirit rules the world. ... This great need constitutes a stupendous call to the church to bring home to the world Christ as the revelation of the Father, the light of the world. ... We must never settle down into comfortable ways, as if our work was accomplished. We must never be content just to carry on. We must all be filled with "divine discontent," until we have established a better world, and one more ruled and governed by the spirit of Jesus than ours is to-day.
