When I consider the great darkness out of which I have...

When I consider the great darkness out of which I have been lifted through some understanding of the teachings of Christian Science, I know that there are no words in which I can adequately express my gratitude. I was brought out of the bondage of Egypt—a condition of intense loneliness and great unhappiness, when there seemed no light in any direction, no way out. Then a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came into my hands. I began to read it eagerly, realizing from the first that it was what I needed. In a few months I was free from the conditions that had made life such a burden. I was established in another home, with new interests; and I had found the "pearl of great price."

It is my desire in this testimony to speak also of a wonderful healing that came to me after I had been a student of this great truth for some time. I was taken ill with a very severe condition of skin trouble. I suffered intensely day and night, but sought no other help than Christian Science treatment. At the end of three weeks, when the inharmonious conditions had not appeared to lessen at all, I declared one morning to the friend who nursed me that she must let the practitioner know that I felt I could not bear to have the necessary dressings done. (These were only what were essential from the standpoint of cleanliness.) The message came back to me that I should repeat "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) aloud while the necessary work was being done for me. All that morning, almost incessantly, I carried out those instructions; and the next day I was healed. There was no more suffering; I had a new skin; and oh, the wonder of it!

During all the time of this illness my every need was met in the most wonderful way. A dear friend came in the day after I was taken ill, found out my condition, and from that moment brought me everything she could think of that I might be glad to have. The practitioner had previously been matron in a hospital, and was able to help us in other most practical ways. The friend with whom I lived undertook to do all the necessary nursing, so that those dark days were quietly passed through without any difficulty from my relatives, who lived near, and who were not in any way in sympathy with Christian Science.—(Miss) Rose Amy Bainbridge, Brookline, Massachusetts.
