Employment

In certain countries, wherever one goes and in almost every newspaper one picks up, one is met at the present time with pitiful tales of unemployment and consequent suffering and misery. Although doing their very best to solve this pressing problem and alleviate distress, men seem quite inadequate to the task, the remedy lying beyond the reach of mortals. What is the cause of all the misery? If there is a God,—cry some,—why does He not listen to our prayers, and send us help? The help is already at hand; but how few avail themselves of it!

The opening words of the bible are, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth;" and a few verses farther on one reads: "God created man in his own image;" "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Now, if God made all, and all are His children, made in His likeness, it is clear that the universe, including man, must be the expression or manifestation of God, divine Mind, and so must be employed by Him to carry out His will.

One meaning of the word "employ" is "to occupy the time, attention, and labor of;" so, in reality, God, good, must be occupying the time, attention, and labor of all His children. And when we realize this, and are obedient to the divine Mind, which includes all wisdom, the result will be perfect harmony and well-being for all. But, some one may argue, Present circumstances are entirely beyond my control; and until they are altered I do not see how I can obtain work. Circumstances may be beyond one's control, but can we say that anything is beyond God's control?
