Thank you for the words of appreciation of Christian Science as the means of "release from the gloom which formerly more or less held sway over religion," as given in a recent issue under "Hillside Philosophy." Christian Science has indeed brought cheerfulness and courage to mankind; and it has done so in the way Christ Jesus taught—not by a "spirit of optimism," nor by the mesmeric repetition of phrases or formulas, but by an understanding of the truth about God and man. Jesus had joy, hope, and confidence because he understood that the Supreme Being is good; that man, the image and likeness of God, reflects good, not evil; that God did not make evil and has no knowledge of evil; that man has nothing to fear, since the law of Love, or good, guides and guards all the events of his life; that what seems to be an evil condition is, consequently, "as a dream in the night," which passes with the waking. Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"—free from gloom, fear, and disease. This knowledge of the truth brings lasting and permanent cheerfulness. The world needs to follow more faithfully the teachings and commands of Christ Jesus. Then the way will open to permanent peace, happiness, and health.
