In accordance with the Scriptures, Christian Science...
Weekly Post
In accordance with the Scriptures, Christian Science teaches that God is one. The word "God" is used only for the Father, who is infinite Life, Spirit, Mind. Christ is "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 583). The teaching of Christian Science destroys the confusion of trying to call the Son the Father, or the idea the Mind; but in destroying this confusion it in no way detracts from the glory and divinity of the Christ. Mrs. Eddy does not limit the Christ to Jesus, neither did Jesus himself ("Before Abraham was, I am" could not refer to his human presence); neither did Paul, who spoke of Christ "in me" and Christ "in you;" neither did the writer of the epistle to the Hebrews in the passage your correspondent quotes. When Christ Jesus was asked to explain who he was, he replied: "Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."
That Christian Science "concentrates attention to the body to the neglect of the soul" has not been a general experience. Those who study this subject earnestly have invariably found that love, joy, peace, justice, truthfulness, and obedience to Christ Jesus' commands, as well as health of body, attend the better understanding of God and man. Dr. Edward Parsons, president of an American college, recently said in a sermon: "The Christian Science churches have been crowded because they have been in a real way the church of the living God. They have persuaded people that there is a living God whose strength is in a real way at their command."
