Mary Baker Eddy is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She explains her discovery thus: "In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery Christian Science" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 107). Knowing that her discovery must be practically applied to bear fruit, she founded the various activities of the Christian Science movement.

It is not the purpose of The Mother Church to make money. It may be said that its purpose is to benefit mankind by lifting them out of material beliefs to the consciousness of spiritual Truth, which results in saving the sinner and healing the sick. The Christian Science Monitor, a daily international newspaper, is published by The Christian Science Publishing Society and is, as has been said, "unquestionably the best daily newspaper in the world." There are sixteen churches of Christ, Scientist, in Chicago, and these are branches of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Thirteen of these branch churches occupy edifices of architectural worth; and another beautiful church structure is nearing completion.
