In November, 1921, I felt so ill that I had to be absent...
In November, 1921, I felt so ill that I had to be absent from school and consult a doctor, who said I needed to take care of myself. Later, I had a fifth attack of inflammatory rheumatism. I was so ill that I was taken to a hospital, where the doctors sentenced me to stay in bed for six months. As there was no improvement at the end of a month, my parents took me home again. After several days I seemed better, and forced myself to go back to school. Three days later I had a relapse, and the doctors said my heart was seriously affected. The pain was so severe that I could not move in bed. My whole family became alarmed at this, for we thought I might never recover.
In the meantime, a friend visited my mother and told her about Christian Science, advising us to get into touch with a practitioner. We did so, and she came at once to see us. She provided me immediately with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, telling me to read it well. After the first treatment I felt much better; after three days I was up; and in a fortnight I had visited the practitioner, who was treating me regularly. I had read Science and Health, and was completely healed, within this period of time.
A few days later I was sent to work in the mountains, where I spent six months exposed to rain and cold, and at a very high altitude, without ever feeling any evil results. To begin with, I felt very lonely and asked to have Science and Health sent to me. This book and Le Héraut were my daily companions; and I found in them all the help I needed. Through diligent study I have been able to demonstrate the truth on several occasions; for which I am glad and grateful.
