Although the World War had made many gaps in our...
Although the World War had made many gaps in our family circle, I had begun to believe that I had come, through most earnest endeavors, to the understanding of the one great brotherhood. On going to the invaded part of the Rhine in the summer of 1921, I discovered, however, that I had not yet solved this great problem, because when I saw what were to me the enemy's troops the struggle began anew. During all my attempts to overcome these painful sentiments the article "Love Your Enemies" in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 8) and the wonderful chapter on Love in I Corinthians, with its words, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, ... I am nothing," always helped me very much; and, hearing that Christian Science services were held at Coblenz, I went to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, where the attendants were principally American officers and their wives. The First Reader was an officer in uniform. From the desk I then heard the very same words from the thirteenth chapter of I Corinthians which had given me so much strength during the week, and it flowed through my consciousness like a pure stream washing away all former bitterness. The understanding of the power of the one Mind then came to me like a revelation, and I felt more than ever convinced that there was but one great brotherhood. I was obliged then and there to give this wonderful experience in a testimony, after which several other testimonies followed on the same important subject. When the service was over, we all shook hands warmly, and felt that it had indeed been a feast of love.
At the same time, I wish to express my thanks for the healing of a knee trouble from which I had suffered a whole year, and which disappeared that very winter. This was the natural result of the inward progress I had, through God's grace, made. My gratitude to God is boundless; and I think with love and devotion of our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
