Those not familiar with the teachings of Christian Science...

Those not familiar with the teachings of Christian Science may have the impression that faith is the basis of its healing work. This, however, is far from the truth. Faith may be nothing more than a blind belief. One may have faith in that which has no real existence; and such faith can have no merit as a healing agency. Christian Scientists have nothing in common with so-called faith healers. The understanding that God created all, that His creation is perfect and good, and that He did not create sickness or evil, is the basis of Christian Science. It was the understanding of these spiritual truths that enabled Jesus to heal "all manner of disease." The divine Principle, when understood and properly applied, will heal the sick to-day just as certainly as it did two thousand years ago; but it must be understood; it is not merely a question of faith. Sickness and sin are the result of false beliefs and wrong thinking, and may be healed through an understanding of God's law of love and good. Mrs. Eddy has said on page 393 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "A false belief is both the tempter and the tempted, the sin and the sinner, the disease and its cause. It is well to be calm in sickness; to be hopeful is still better; but to understand that sickness is not real and that Truth can destroy its seeming reality, is best of all, for this understanding is the universal and perfect remedy." Faith in the omnipotence of God and the perfection of His creation is good, but Christian Science is the understanding and demonstration of this divine Principle. Every one should be permitted to employ the system of healing he prefers, but the distinction between Christian Science and faith healing should be clearly defined.
