Kindly allow me to answer the questions sent to the editor of The Christian Science Monitor and which you have printed in your issue of December 14. "Will you please let us know what edition of the Bible you favor in school instruction, the Catholic, the Protestant, or the Christian Science Bible and its key to the Scriptures? Would you favor the exclusive use of the edition recently issued by Jewish scholars in English translation?"

There is no Christian Science Bible. The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is in the nature of a commentary on the Bible, but is not limited to any edition or version. The King James Version of the Bible is used in the services of Christian Science churches. The attitude of the Christian Science church toward the Bible in public schools is that teachers should be allowed to read without comment from any version of the Bible, but that this should be optional, not compulsory. Christian Scientists have no objection to the recent translation into English by Jewish scholars of the Jewish Scriptures. I have a copy of that translation near my desk, and have consulted it frequently.
