[Written for the Sentinel]

Songs in the Night

When purple shadows deepen in the vale,
And twilight darkens into dusky night,
When earthborn mists envelop hill and dale,
Oh, let my thought in song take upward flight.

"Still, still with Thee," though blackest night enshrouds,
My voice in songs of Thy great goodness raise;
And though my eyes see not for darkling clouds,
Oh, let me still continue in Thy praise!

Sweet songs of joy and promise lead me on;
The darkness flees before the coming morn;
My heart leaps up to greet the radiant dawn;
And hope and peace and patient love are born.
