Signs of the Times

[From the Star, Auckland, New Zealand, Jan. 12, 1924]

The report of the committee appointed by the Lambeth Conference to consider the spiritual needs of the time has been carefully drafted, and reflects the opinion of capable and earnest men on the difficult subject of spiritual healing. ... In regard to mental attitude, the most important factors are confidence, hope, and calm and peaceful frame of mind, and general cheerfulness. These, in the church's opinion, are best secured by spiritual reliance on divine power. ... The difficult question arises as to why, if these [sacramental] rites are of divine efficacy and power, there should be any need of physician or surgeon. ... At present our knowledge of these things [healing processes] is extremely limited, and the sphere of spiritual healing may be wider than the report seems to indicate. The interrelation of spirit, mind, and body is being scientifically investigated, and the church is urged to give full weight to any scientific discoveries that may result from these investigations.
