A little more than seven years ago, I went home one...
A little more than seven years ago, I went home one evening from my work feeling I could not endure much longer a life of fear and worry, disappointment and failure. For more than four years I had endeavored to drown out of my thoughts an experience of failure and financial loss by the use of whisky and drugs in an ever increasing daily quantity, and by indulging many of the vices attendant on such a life of shame. I had not the courage to go ahead; I wanted to quit, and for several weeks had contemplated some end to it all. My heart cried out for relief; and it came, as it usually does when man's extremity is reached, in an unusual way. Yet, when Truth is understood, it is the divinely natural way.
My little daughter, who was attending the Christian Science Sunday School, had brought home a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scritptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and as I carelessly picked up this book from the table, little did I think as I opened it that I held in my hand the weapon that would end my life of shame and misery, and establish me in my true relation of sonship with God. My joy knew no bounds as the evil habits and false appetites and pleasures and pains of sense began to fall away, as I continued the reading of this book. I was indeed on the mountain top; and I am still rejoicing in the simple truth that released me, namely, man's God-given dominion over evil habits, sinful appetites, and physical and mental disorders, which have no place in God's perfect creation.
I am grateful for the life of Mrs. Eddy, who was pure enough to discern the law of God, and unselfish enough to give it to the world in a practical, applicable, and demonstrable religion, which both heals and saves.
