Much Shall be Required
Christ Jesus , as recorded in Luke's gospel, closed his parable, setting forth the sure rewards of the faithful student and the equally sure punishment of the unfaithful, with these significant words: "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required." Micah explicitly states what the requirements of the Lord are. His words leave one in no doubt: "And what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" Words, it seems, could scarcely indicate more clearly that what God requires of us is revealed only as we gain spiritual truth, the facts of being.
Christian Scientists are convinced that they may may learn through the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy the requirements of true Christian living—God's requirements; and these requirements are by no means slight. But so great are the rewards of an honest effort to evangelize one's self, that is to say, to meet God's requirements, that the faithful students of Christian Science gratefully apply themselves to the gaining of an ever larger understanding of divine Principle and the operation of spiritual law. They prove to their full satisfaction that only when living in conformity to the teachings of Christ Jesus, as explained and applied by Mrs. Eddy, are they truly happy, because making true progress.
Great are the rewards of righteousness, but it should not be overlooked that obligations are entailed in reaping the blessedness of spiritual understanding. The Lord does require of men a full measure of obedience, humility, and devotion in the application of divine Principle to all their ways. In no particular may they justifiably fall away from His high standard or safely descend to the old ways, to the indulgence in material beliefs. The call to come up higher brings new obligations, all of which may become steppingstones to greater and ever greater glories. He who hath freely received must freely give.
