Christian Science and Christianity are one, and are based...
Times
Christian Science and Christianity are one, and are based entirely upon the teachings of Jesus that God is the only cause and creator and that there is no other power governing man and the universe. No basis can be found, either in the Bible or in the teachings of Christian Science, for the use of suggestion or any of the other operations of the so-called human mind in solving any of the problems of life. Of course, the claim of the human mind that it has all power over man is as old as history. Jesus was charged by the Pharisees with casting out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils. But his answer that Satan cannot cast out Satan, and that a house divided against itself cannot stand is an entire repudiation of the human mind as having any power whatever; and his statement in conclusion, as given in Matthew, that "if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you," is a definite and positive declaration of his recognition of God as the only power. Paul, in his epistle to the Romans, points out the distinction between the human or carnal mind and that spiritual-mindedness or understanding which is of God. He says that "the carnal mind," or "mind of the flesh," according to the Revised Version, "is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."
If God is the only cause and creator—the only power—then the operations of the human or fleshly mind, such as suggestion or will-power, being enmity against God, must be without Principle or power. Mrs. Eddy sums up the matter completely when she says on page 103 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "In reality there is no mortal mind, and consequently no transference of mortal thought and will-power. Life and being are of God."
