The Christian Science church was organized "to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17). Its phenomenal growth throughout the world is the direct result of Christ Jesus' promise that "these signs shall follow them that believe; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." The study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy will enable any one to be thus practical in Christian living.

New-thought or mental science cannot be coupled with Christian Science because they are opposite to it in theory and practice. Their effort is to secure the influence or control of one human mind over another, which is mesmerism or hypnotism. Christian Scientists rely, without a mental reservation, on the infinite divine Mind, God, "who healeth all thy diseases." They endeavor to let the Mind of Christ be in them. This method alone is safe, and results in regeneration, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The two methods are exemplified by the incident in Acts, where Simon seemed to have success for a time by using sorcery; but finding that Christianity, as Peter and John practiced it, was so much superior to his method, he offered them money for their power and understanding. Peter's reply was, "Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God."
