From childhood up to the time I was led to investigate Christian Science, I was extremely nervous and suffered from many of the diseases that go with nervous difficulty. Three or four times a year I visited some rest cure or health sanitarium. While at home I had almost constant attention from an osteopath and masseuse, and took doses of bromide, sometimes as often as eight times a day, to quiet my nerves. Our family physician had pronounced mine the worst case of neurasthenia he had ever known. I also wore glasses, and suffered considerably from pains in my head and neck.

I had heard of Christian Science, and one afternoon, when I was almost desperate with pain, the thought came to me to try it. The practitioner asked me what seemed to be the trouble. I told him; and after a question or two, he told me to fulfill the engagement I had for that evening and to let him hear from me the next day. I enjoyed a most delightful evening; and though I did not realize it until almost a year later, I was healed of neurasthenia in that one absent treatment. I made it a point to see him a few days later, and in my ignorance and ingratitude I argued that perhaps Christian Science might be good for nervous people with bad dispositions, but I certainly could not see how it could heal organic troubles and any such thing as the need for glasses. The practitioner patiently explained to me that Christian Science was doing these things; and I left his office that day doubting and somewhat rebellious, though I had asked him to help me with my eyes. As soon as I got outside his office, I took off my glasses, returned to my office, and made up a financial statement. My eyes did not trouble me in the least; and in spite of my doubt and ingratitude, I was healed of the need for glasses. I never put on my glasses again after that visit with him. My family and I realized then that in Christian Science there was something well worth striving for. We purchased copies of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and became students of Christian Science. It does not seem to me that my gratitude for any physical healing can ever equal my gratitude for having been led to this truth.

Tonsillitis, from which I suffered from four to eight weeks every winter, was healed, and likewise a chronic case of intestinal indigestion, sciatic rheumatism, and many minor physical ailments. Since my first healing, Christian Science has been our only physician. My mother has been healed of hemorrhages and the fear of apoplexy.
