That Christian Science healing is spiritual is proved by the instantaneous healing which often comes through the spiritual illumination of a verse of the Bible or a sentence in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Two instances of this stand out before me as waymarks on the journey from sense to Soul.

Fourteen years ago, when I had known of Christian Science only a few months, I suffered from badly chapped hands. I was living at that time in a place which was supposed to be very bleak, exposed to cold winds, and where the water was exceptionally hard. I had been in the habit of using creams to keep my hands soft and smooth; but after seeing the truth of Christian Science and realizing its healing power, I was reluctant to do this. One day they were in a very painful condition, open and bleeding, and my husband said I really ought to use some material remedy. That night I sat down to study the Lesson Sermon for the week, and as I read, one sentence in Science and Health seemed to stand out from the page with new meaning (p. 481): "Man is tributary to God, Spirit, and to nothing else." I realized that man is spiritual, governed only by spiritual law, and not by so-called laws of matter, which are not laws but false beliefs. I was so uplifted with this glimpse of the truth of being that I entirely forgot my hands; and the next morning, when I again thought of them, they were absolutely healed, smooth and well, and have so remained since that time.

About three months ago, I was attacked by an acute form of indigestion, and at once began to apply my knowledge of Christian Science. I knew the cause was not in matter, that the indisposition had nothing to do with food; so I refused to make any change in diet, but rather sought to follow the words of Jesus, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink." A short time before this, a suggestion of fear had presented itself to my thought. Although it had seemed to be destroyed, it must still have been latent in thought; and I saw that the fear was the cause of the digestive trouble, and must be cast out. One morning as I was reading the Bible, I came to these words of David: "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." As I read, a wonderful train of thoughts unfolded to me: that to "give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name," we must acknowledge Him as all-power and the only power, omnipotent, omnipresent; that we can come before Him only by this understanding of Him as the only power and presence; that to worship Him in the "beauty of holiness" must be to acknowledge the wholeness of man, his perfection as the reflection of God. This realization of the perfection of God and His creation entirely destroyed all fear; and I was healed from that time.
