As Jesus, his disciples, and the apostles were insulted and persecuted, so it has been with every advocate of Truth through all ages. In "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur every one may find the truth about Mrs. Eddy's pure, pious life, which after her own wonderful healing from years of suffering was wholly consecrated to the work of elucidating for suffering humanity, through her writings and demonstrations, what God had revealed to her. The parents of Mrs. Eddy were known as very devout and highly esteemed people, who cherished the most sincere love for their daughter. Mrs. Eddy's name is honored and loved by the adherents of Christian Science because, through her, they have gained a new and better understanding of God and man's relation to Him. Mrs. Eddy has never put herself forward as "equal to Jesus Christ;" nor has she permitted her adherents to regard her in such a way.
Christian Science is no "new religion," as it is wholly founded on the Bible. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 109): "For three years after my discovery, I sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from society, and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule. The search was sweet, calm, and buoyant with hope, not selfish nor depressing. I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration." In Christian Science every use of will-power, self-suggestion, and all connected therewith, is wholly forbidden, as well as every use of formulas. In Science and Health (p. 1) is written, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love;" and because Christian Scientists have this firm faith in God this faith cannot be shaken, even if the so-called material forms vanish. A Christian Scientist knows that God is the only Life and that, therefore, the image and likeness of God—which the teaching of Christian Science acknowledges as the only real man—reflects and has eternal life. Jesus did not heal all with whom he came in contact, although his love was the same for all; but the Bible tells that in some places "he did not many mighty works . . . because of their unbelief."
Christian Science is "Science," because it is the knowledge of exact spiritual law, of spiritual truth, the truth about God, man, and the universe, a knowledge of Principle and of spiritual facts, classified and made available in work, life, and the search for truth. Christian Science is "Christian," because it is founded on and follows the teaching of Christ Jesus; and it is the only religion which is giving to the world proofs that the teaching of the Bible is both divine and scientific.
