About eleven years ago I began to read the Christian Science...

About eleven years ago I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At that time my sister was beginning to study Christian Science, and I started to read the book simply because I wanted to see what it was about—not with any idea of its helping me in any way, because I felt opposed to what I supposed its teaching to be. I had never been strong, and suffered continually from anaemia and chronic indigestion; indeed, I was always tired, and hardly ever free from pain. I was taking medicine constantly; and though I tried to go about and do things like other people, it was a ceaseless effort to keep up, and I was filled with fear of the future—fear of illness and lack and of growing old.

I read the textbook for about six weeks; and though there was a great deal I did not understand, I loved it; and during that time I was healed of the indigestion and anaemia. I had no treatment, and I do not know exactly when the healing came; but one day I realized that the pain had gone, and the weakness and tiredness with it. After that I took up the study of Christian Science in earnest. I had many struggles with old theological beliefs; but as I went on, the teaching became clearer to me; and during all these years it has never failed to help me, either through my own Science work or that of a practitioner. For several years I had worn glasses for reading and writing, on account of astigmatism. I had treatment for this condition, and though the trouble seemed slow in yielding it was finally overcome. I have not used the glasses for the last seven years, although during that time I have done a great deal of reading, writing, and fine work, including shorthand.

I have had a great deal of physical healing, for which I am very grateful; but most of all I rejoice in the wider outlook and freedom from fear which this teaching has gradually brought me; for the better understanding of God and of the Bible, which I had always loved but failed to comprehend; and for the opportunities it has given me to be of more use in the world. As I go on studying, I see more and more the wonderfully unselfed love of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, in her discovery and establishment of Christian Science; and I am grateful beyond words for what she has done for mankind.—(Miss) Dorothy M. Hutchings, Fairleigh, Kensington, London, England.
