The Lectures

WESTON-SUPER-MARE, ENGLAND  (First Church).—Joseph Axtell made the following prefatory remarks at a Christian Science lecture by Judge Samuel W. Greene:—

Perhaps never before in the history of the religious world has there been such a reaching out for a more spiritual understanding of God, of the universe, and of man than there is to-day; and it is not in the least extravagant to say that Christian Science is, in a very great measure, satisfying that yearning. The indwelling Christ-idea, which existed before time was, is manifesting itself in the hearts of men to-day, and is gradually but surely bringing about one grand brotherhood. It is this eternal, perfect Christ-idea which permeates the whole of the teachings of Christian Science. One of the most prominent phases of Christian Science is its tender and compassionate message of healing. From all over the world may be gathered a mighty host of witnesses as to the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science; and I am intensely but humbly grateful to be counted amongst them.
