Nearly twenty years ago a relative asked me to borrow...
Nearly twenty years ago a relative asked me to borrow from a Christian Science Reading Room a copy of Mrs. Eddy's work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," for him to read. Having heard of a wonderful healing by Christian Science treatment, I was somewhat curious to look into the book, so borrowed it as requested, and at once read it myself.
For some years I had been suffering badly from rheumatic gout, and had been each year to Aix-les-Bains, in France, for baths and massage for that ailment, having local treatment for the eyes, which the gout had also attacked, causing much suffering and discomfort. I finally consulted an eminent oculist several times about the latter. He inquired minutely into my family history concerning ailments, telling me he was very sorry for me; that the eye trouble was incurable; and that as it was caused by inheritance from both sides of my family, he could do very little, if anything at all, to help me, concluding with the verdict that I would get much worse as I grew older. I also had been a sufferer from heart trouble, which made me nervous and fearful, and caused much alarm at times to myself and others.
In reading Science and Health I found that there is only one inheritance, and that is God's gift of all good, at all times, to all; and that to know and to love God annuls the old fear and belief of penalty through heredity. I began to find that Truth and Love do indeed make free. These words in Science and Health (p. 393) became more real each day: "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government."
