Peace

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." This is a positive statement, made by the prophet long ago, of what we may expect, and have a right to enjoy. And yet, looking back over the centuries of Bible history, we find that only here and there are shown positive evidences that mankind had caught the real meaning of these words in a sufficient degree to make practical application of them in daily life. In all ages throughout the history of the human race there have come into everyday experience the disturbing and turbulent influences of a so-called mortal mind apart from God. It was to meet these phases of mortal belief that the inspired words of the prophets were given to the people,—words, alas, which often fell upon dull ears and gross hearts steeped in materiality.

With the advent of the Christian era our great Teacher, "as meek as he was mighty," as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page597 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," not only taught the inspiring words of Truth, but proved the vital power of his words by what are termed miracles. In the face of even these convincing proofs, we find the same appearance of unbelief. Mortal mind was so engrossed in materiality that only comparatively few caught the import of the truth Jesus taught and practiced; and the vast majority were either indifferent to what they heard, or were so incensed by the rebuke received therefrom that they were ready to do violence to the great Teacher—even to put him to death. To those, however, who could hear his words, he said: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,"—words plainly showing that when the word of Truth comes to human consciousness it supplies a sense of peace, even amid the turmoil and unrest of human experience.

The world gradually drifted away from the understanding of how to make practical the words of Jesus, and religion again became little more than form and ceremony. The vital essence of the Christ, Truth, however, has again been revealed through one whose thought was sufficiently spiritualized to discern the Science of what the Master taught. Mary Baker Eddy has shown so clearly, by teaching and practical demonstration, how to apply spiritual truth to the working out of every problem of human experience, that all who will may understand and practice it. In the face of some of the most convincing proofs, what do we again find? A condition similar to that found in the days of the prophets and especially in the time of Jesus the Christ; namely, unbelief, ridicule, condemnation. Never was there a time in the worlds history when humanity needed, as to-day, the very peace which Jesus said he would leave as a rich inheritance for those who believed on him. Through the teachings of Christian Science this peace comes to the business man, harassed by the great problems of competition; to the mother, struggling with the cares of the home and the fears which assail every faithful parent; to the despondent invalid who has lost hope and courage,—to all alike this peace comes, giving rich proof of the statement of Mrs. Eddy in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 263), "Always bear in mind that His presence, power, and peace meet all human needs and reflect all bliss."
