Christian Science has indeed been to me "a lamp unto...
Christian Science has indeed been to me "a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." After being graduated from a university I entered with hope and faith into the work of the ministry in a denominational church. This work was followed because I believed that Christianity had done more for the advancement of the race than any other influence; though I felt that no church reached the fullness of Christianity as presented by Jesus. I had heard something of the works of Christian Science, believed that it contained some truth, and had resolved that I would investigate it and other so-called methods of mental healing to find how much truth and how much error they contained. Little did I think that I would soon be compelled to turn to Christian Science for my own healing.
Before carrying out my intention of investigating this Science my health seemed suddenly to give way, and for months I spent weary days and fearful, sleepless nights in dread of nervous prostration and other ailments. My religious conviction was not sufficient to stay the ravages of fear and discouragement. Medicine, surgery, and other forms of treatment, together with the loving support of the church during my absence for months, likewise failed to furnish any lasting hope of the return of health. Many efforts to resume my work failed. The future seemed to hold only dread and despair. In this extremity I turned to Christian Science, saying that I would give it as good a chance as I had given other means to help me, and that if there was any good in it I would find it. The service of a practitioner was secured, and after one treatment I had a restful, refreshing sleep, for the first time in many months. My health improved immediately and steadily, though some physical ills did not fully yield for some months.
With these proofs that God is available to heal in our age as He was in the time of Christ Jesus, there came the joy of new hope, new life, an enlarged outlook upon mankind and all world affairs. The light of Truth brought wonderful illumination to the Bible; it was indeed a Book of Life applicable to daily needs, and powerful to dispel sin, sickness, and sorrow. In a few months after I had taken up the study of this Science I was called upon to help one who was in a state very similar to that from which I had been lifted. None but those who have experienced it can know the joy that was mine in seeing that one healed. Principle bore witness to the silent and audible word of Truth, and fear and disease were dispelled. In the short space of less than half a year it had been proved to me, not only that Christian Science is God's means of healing, but that any one can apply this Science and bring forth its natural fruits of healing in proportion to one's fidelity to and understanding of Truth.
