Hamar Stiftstidende
In the report given of a meeting of ministers it is quoted that one of them mentions Christian Science as "an occult trend of mind, an occult current, which, like a great wave of mysticism, is rolling over the world." Also that Christian Science is coordinated with "psychological research, the New Thought movement, theosophy, spiritualism, and the pentecostal movement."
As these views of the teachings of Christian Science are erroneous, I should like to ask space for a short correction. In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, there is a chapter called "Animal Magnetism Unmasked," in which she clearly points out how wholly Christian Science is opposed to all occultism; for Christian Science is based upon the Bible. On page 484 of the textbook the question reads: "Does Christian Science, or metaphysical healing, include medication, material hygiene, mesmerism, hypnotism, theosophy, or spiritualism?" And the answer is clearly stated: "Not one of them is included in it. In divine Science, the supposed laws of matter yield to the law of Mind." The law of the divine Mind is the basis of Christian Science teaching, and this law of God includes right thinking and reveals the facts of being. Christian Science reasons from God to man, from cause to effect. Mysticism is therefore as wholly excluded from this teaching as from the teaching and the life of Christ Jesus.
The many hundreds of Christian Science churches and societies dotted all over the civilized world and the hundreds of thousands of devout worshipers, most of whom have received in some way practical proof of the value of the teaching of Christian Science, are surely sufficient evidence that this teaching is bringing to all classes of searchers the peace for which they are all sighing. The words of Christ, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," exclude every need of covering this truth with a trace of mysticism, or using any human will-power to approach God and salvation.
