In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 404), "The healthy sinner is the hardened sinner." I was always healthy from a physical point of view, but mentally, very far from healthy. My first experience with this blessed truth was before I knew anything more about Christian Science than that such a religion existed, at which time a loved one passed on. A daughter, however, who had been healed through Christian Science treatment of physical discords, requested the presence in our home of a Christian Science practitioner. Through the understanding of God which this dear woman had gained by the study of this truth, there came about a sense of peace and harmony, a perfect calm, for which I was profoundly grateful.
Although I was what mortal belief calls healthy, I have had several physical discords healed through Christian Science; but these benefits fade away into nothingness compared with the spiritual uplift which has come to me through the study of this truth and an earnest desire to live its teaching. I had all my life been afflicted with these awful mental discords,—dishonesty, criticism of my fellow-man, pride, envy, jealousy, suspicion, resentment, irritation, and the many erroneous thoughts that usually go along with such thoughts. These caused great mental disturbance, which usually manifested itself in a sense of physical discord; although for a long time it was not realized that these physical discords arose entirely from the wrong thinking. After taking up the study of Christian Science, with a strong conviction that it is the truth,—the truth which makes men free,—it was not long before the absence of the physical discords began to be noticed, causing me to think more seriously as to cause and effect. Then I began to see that as I lived—thought and acted—in obedience to what I had learned of God's law through the teaching of Christian Science, and relinquished the belief in human will-power, and sought first the kingdom of God, assured of His ever protecting care, relief from all sense of suffering never failed to be manifested; so that now I have ever with me a realization of His power and willingness to protect me from all harm, when I am obedient to His law. As Paul says in his epistle to the Philippians, "I count not myself to have apprehended;" I fully realize my shortcomings, but I do strive for that Mind to be reflected in me "which was also in Christ Jesus;" and as the failures to be obedient grow less, I feel I can truthfully say I am a better man than before coming to Christian Science.
I have had class instruction. I am grateful for the great privilege of teaching in the Christian Science Sunday School, as well as for other work in the branch church to which I belong. I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for all of her uplifting writings; for The Mother Church and the Manual, which governs all of its activities; and to all the dear friends who have done so much to aid me in my journey along the heavenly road.—Latrobe J. Sellon, Chicago, Ill.
