The Lectures
Wheeling, W. Va. (First Church).—Introducing William D. Kilpatrick, a Christian Science lecturer, John E. Coffin said in part:—
There was a time when God was worshiped materially; and only a few of the higher lights understood God and His great love for humanity. Such men as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, and certain others, were able to demonstrate His power. In other words, the sunshine of God's love for the world touched only the mountain peaks, while down in the valley was darkness, misery, and superstition. Not until the first Christmas morning did the full effulgence of His love burst into the darkened valleys below. For about three hundred years following the mission of Jesus were the Christian people able to heal the sick and raise the dead; and not until materialism came in again and destroyed their power, did the teachings of the Christ begin to wane.
When men's hearts began to break because of loved ones passing and the failure of material remedies, then they looked up with tear-dimmed eyes, and asked, Why? God has answered their prayers through a pure-minded woman, who brought back into the world the understanding of the demonstrations of the Christ. And the name of this pure woman is Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who through her earnest study of the Bible and consecration to God was enabled to bring to hungry hearts the law of God in its demonstrable form, whereby thousand upon thousands have been healed of their diseases.
