At the age of fifteen, I had been seriously ill with a spinal disease, and was earnestly looking for the truth of existence and for that redeeming Love reflected by our Master toward Mary Magdalene, when "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was brought into my home by an English friend. She asked me if I objected to her studying it. I was quite astonished at that question, and replied that my ancestors had not fought for religious freedom in order that I might be opposed to the study of any sincere interpretation of the Bible.
Having read an article against Christian Science, I decided to investigate it for myself, and to be guided by these words of our Master: "Ye shall know them by their fruits." When I went to a Christian Science service for the first time, I felt the loving atmosphere; and when a dear practitioner told me about the Love that knows no sin, I felt the fervor of the disciple who said, "My Lord and my God."
Christian Science has healed me of grief, of loneliness, of a sense of criticism, of all the ailments which I had as a result of the spinal disease, and of the fear of a relapse from it. It has enabled me to overcome anguish during the war, and to see my dear brothers come out unharmed from the worst battle fields. I have relied on the understanding which Christian Science gives of God, for every need, and have never taken any medicine since 1912. But more than all the human blessing are the greater joys of understanding more of the Christ-life, of the Love that casteth out fear, and of the Truth that maketh free—of a freedom unknown by mortal mind. I have had the greatest and most loving help from Christian Science practitioners, and the grand privilege of class instruction. For all these blessings, I am deeply grateful to God and to His Christ, as revealed to us by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
