Divine Resources

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 312), Mrs. Eddy writes, "Mortals believe in a finite personal God; while God is infinite Love, which must be unlimited." In that sentence our Leader exposes with scientific accuracy the reason why mortals fail to avail themselves of the unlimited resources of God. They are persistently holding beliefs about the creator which are finite, constantly tending to think of Him as a being like unto themselves, instead of knowing Him as infinite Mind, infinite Life, infinite Love, and thus apprehending the truth concerning His unlimited being. Clinging to their false beliefs about God, mortals fail to receive those divine blessings which are ever at hand. It was with a profound knowledge of the Father's love and boundless care for His creation that Christ Jesus, while speaking on the subject of prayer in the Sermon on the Mount, said, "Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."

In order, then, to be able to avail ourselves of the divine resources, the first necessity is to gain an understanding of God, and of God's true being. It is simply useless to think that one can receive and utilize these resources in any other way. And Christian Science is enabling mankind to acquire this understanding. What the nature of God is, what the nature of God's creation is, and what exactly is the constant relationship between the creator and His creation and how this relationship is sustained, Christian Science teaches throughout all of Mrs. Eddy's writings. The Christian Scientist is not in any doubt about God's nature or the nature of His creation, nor in any doubt as to the spiritual law which supports creation. Through the discovery of Christian Science the world made a great leap forward spiritually. For, surely, nothing could ever help its progress more than knowledge of reality, and of the power which this knowledge gives to detect, and thereafter to discard, whatever is untrue regarding God and His creation.

In considering the question of divine resources, then, we have to remember that there are not two creations. There is only the one real creation. God is infinite Spirit, and His creation is spiritual; and the spiritual or real creation is God's manifestation of Himself. There can, therefore, be no separation between God and His creation. There is perfect unity between them. Now, creation includes individual man. Hence man, the idea of God, the child of God, is always at-one with God; and is, therefore, ever sustained by God. There is never a moment when this spiritual relationship is dissolved. It has always existed; it will always exist. God has ever been; and man has ever been God's perfect image or reflection, ever known by God in every detail of his being. What a marvelous relationship! If we could but realize it clearly enough, every human woe would vanish, every human ill would disappear, every human need would be met. And the acquiring of this clear realization of the truth of absolute being is what mankind must strive for, persistently, steadfastly.
