The New Era

In her study of the Scriptures Mrs. Eddy discovered this all-important fact: namely, that the truth which Christ Jesus taught, a knowledge of which he said would make free, is an exact science and demonstrable in the solution of every human problem. She, therefore, properly called it Christian Science. The Reverend Mr. Sunday cannot apply the term "bunk" to Christian Science, as reported in a recent issue, without including the teachings of Christ Jesus in the same offensive term, for they are one and the same. There is no statement of doctrine to be found in Christian Science which is not logically drawn from Jesus' teachings and practice, and Mrs. Eddy has correctly written in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" on page 342, "If Christianity is not scientific, and Science is not of God, then there is no invariable law, and truth becomes an accident."

When the opponents of Christian Science desire to criticize Mrs. Eddy or her teachings, they usually find it necessary to conjure up something that has no application. Thus there is no warrant whatsoever for the statement that Mrs. Eddy's bodily return is expected by Christian Scientists. In fact, all Mrs. Eddy's teaching has a contrary trend, as must be apparent to any one who reads her writings understandingly. "In founding a pathological system of Christianity," she writes on page 464 of Science and Health, "the author has labored to expound divine Principle, and not to exalt personality."
