I did not turn to Christian Science in the first instance...

I did not turn to Christian Science in the first instance for physical healing, but in the hope that I might find help from it at a time of great trouble and perplexity, when everything seemed to have failed me. I knew practically nothing of its teachings, but I had just met some Christian Scientists for the first time, and, hearing that a lecture on Christian Science was to be given in a neighboring town, I made up my mind to go to it. I had no definite religious belief for a very long time, as I had lost faith in the teachings of the church in which I was brought up, and I could find no system or teaching which appealed to me, upon investigation, as being logical and convincing. As I listened to the lecture on Christian Science, it seemed to me, to my great joy and also rather to my surprise, that possibly here I had found the religion I had almost given up the hope of finding, and with it something that would help me in my troubles. On the following day I went to a Christian Science service and borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read it half that night and during every spare minute in the days that followed, and I knew, as I read, that I had found the religion I had been seeking, which would bring to me an understanding of God.

When I began to read it I was suffering from severe insomnia and other distressing symptoms of incipient nervous breakdown, the result of long continued unhappiness and anxiety, and I was completely healed of these within the first few days of my reading. An internal difficulty from which I had suffered all my life and for which I had tried many remedies, disappeared at the same time. I was also instantaneously healed of a habit of cigarette smoking of about fifteen years' standing, which I had often vainly tried to break by will power. I had since childhood been a great sufferer from neuralgia: for weeks at a time I was never out of pain, which at times became overwhelming, and for which no material remedies had ever afforded me more than very temporary relief. This completely disappeared after I had been reading the textbook for between two and three weeks, while about the same time I was freed from the tendency to catch heavy colds followed by weeks of bronchial trouble and cough, and also from indigestion and liver trouble. In fact my whole physical condition changed, and I found myself able without difficulty to do at least three times as much as I had formerly been capable of. I had no help from a practitioner, the healing being the result of reading the Christian Science textbook. A relative who had been staying with me just before I began the study of Christian Science, and who had been much distressed at my condition, was so struck, on her return a few months later, by the change which had taken place in me that she began to read the textbook herself.

Although my gratitude for the health and strength which Christian Science has brought is very great, I have even more cause for thankfulness in the complete healing of deep sorrow, for guidance through many difficulties, and for the happiness which has come to me. It is now nine years since I began the study, and during that time I have led a very busy, active life, part of the time being spent in the country where my work took me out at all hours and in all weathers, often for considerable distances on foot, and I have never had to miss an engagement from sickness or physical disability. It is quite impossible to give any idea in words of what I owe to Christian Science or of my thankfulness for it.— (Mrs.) Evelyn M. E. Gwynne Evans, London, England.
