We read in Deuteronomy, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." Mrs. Eddy realized the full significance of these words when she opened the Preface to Science and Health with the statement, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." The truth of these words has been proved to me many times during the past ten years, and I am especially grateful for the help I received from them while in the Army.
In September, 1918, I was taken to an army hospital in France and underwent an operation for acute appendicitis, peritonitis, and a ruptured bladder. One of the attending surgeons was heard to say that I had one chance in about two hundred to live, and the other surgeon told me that I was lucky that I was not with the angels. Had he known that one of the definitions of angels in Christian Science is "God's thoughts passing to man" (Science and Health, p. 581) he might have said I was lucky that I was with the angels.
When I recovered from this sickness my records were marked "class D to be returned to the U. S. for discharge," that being the classification given to men who were supposed to be physically unfit for further service. I was given this classification because the doctors said I had a weak stomach and would have to be on a diet and should never do any lifting. With the loving help and care of a Christian Science practitioner in Paris I was able to prove the falsity of these statements and within less than two months after this diagnosis was made I was eating anything I cared for, and since my discharge from the service I have started to work in a factory and am now doing as heavy work as I have ever done. After arriving in the United States I had tonsillitis and pneumonia, and was discharged from the Army with a thirty per cent disability due to a supposed chronic inflammation of the tissues of the heart. I am very grateful to say that this has also been overcome through Christian Science. I had the loving care of the Christian Science Camp Welfare and War Relief committee workers to help me in all my seeming difficulties and found the rooms furnished by the committee to be ports in which we could safely outride any storm that was encountered.
